Abortion

Get The Facts

Abortion is the only option that ends a pregnancy. All abortion procedures have side effects and risks you should know before deciding. We’ll help you get the facts before moving forward.

Choices Medical Services does not provide or refer for abortions. However, we supply factual, unbiased information on all your options, including abortion, so you can prioritize your health and make a thoughtful decision.

What Is Abortion?

Learning about abortion procedures can help you carefully weigh your options and consider your unique circumstances.

There are two main abortion methods: medical abortion and surgical abortion.

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion (also referred to as the “abortion pill”) uses drugs to end a pregnancy. It is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.

The first drug is called mifepristone. It blocks progesterone, a hormone needed for the pregnancy’s growth and development. Without progesterone, the pregnancy will detach from the uterine lining and end.

Misoprostol is taken next. This drug causes uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy from the body with abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

Taking these drugs can cause potential side effects, including:

  • Upset stomach
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

Additionally, medical abortion is associated with certain risks, including:

  • Digestive symptoms
  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (some pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus, requiring another procedure)

Surgical Abortion

Surgical abortion procedures use drugs, surgical tools, and/or suctioning to end and remove the pregnancy. How far along the woman is and other factors will determine the procedure type; the more advanced her gestational age, the more involved the abortion will be.

Mild cramping and spotting or light bleeding can be present for several days after the procedure. However, surgical abortion is associated with serious risks, including:

  • Uterine perforation (when a surgical tool pokes a hole in the uterus)
  • Damage to the cervix
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall (potentially causing painful periods and infertility)
  • Infection

It’s crucial to be aware of your health situation and gather details on your pregnancy before deciding. We’ll help you learn more with a no-cost pregnancy test, possible ultrasound, and information on your options.
